Re: Daily Astorian Article

Above is the link to the article if you haven’t read it yet. It made front page of the website! That’s awesome that they’re getting this kind of press. It’s a shame it’s come to this when the cemetery should have been able to get federal funds for restoring a very unique and important piece of our national history. Oh well.
Even though the reporter and the newspaper ment well, what they stated in their article nearly completely defeated the purpose of having the article at all!!
“But instead of the end for the Monkey Puzzle tree, it was a new beginning for the exotic tree, whose resinous wood is prized by artisans. With help from community members who brought in heavy equipment, the wood was salvaged and sold. Proceeds from its sale are paying for the cemetery’s restoration, which had been stymied for lack of funds.”
This completely and utterly incorrect. The Monkey Puzzle does help. The removal of the Monkey Puzzle tree with it’s valuable wood basically covered the cost of it’s removal, it’s replacement with a baby Monkey Puzzle tree and… yep, that it.
I would say that’s astoundingly short of the $22,000 needed to purchase the replacement columbarium. The article made it sound like people didn’t have to help because it was pretty much covered, but could make donations anyway if they felt super generous. Well, the sad truth is folks, it ain’t covered. Not even close. Greedwood Cemetery has a long, long road to hoe and we need your help! They can’t do this without your help and the generous help of everybody who values and cherishes cemeteries world wide. Mike and Lynda who own the Greenwood Cemetery are far too proud and tough to ask for your help. They are the sweetest, most kind hearted people I’ve met. They wish to restore the cemetery for the families with loved ones there, not for personal pride. Which is why I’m asking for your help. If I could finance this on my own, I would.
I’ve recently lost my day job like so many others, but that’ll never stop me. If you want to help click the link on the main navigation bar that says “Help Greenwood Cemetery.” I’ll make it worth your while, I promise!
Another fact the newspaper failed to mention were the symbolic stakes in ownership being traded for donations. Very neat, getting to own a portion of an Oregon Pioneer Cemetery! All it takes is a donation of any amount.
