Cemetery Stone Angel - Fairmount Cemetery, Davenport Iowa

Cemetery Stone Angel - Fairmount Cemetery, Davenport Iowa

This is one of my earliest photographs and unfortunately, I didn’t document any information about this monument. It was the first one that occurred to me to draw in eyes. That tends to freak people out! I love it because to me, it adds an element which is already there in the expression.

Dreaming Angel - Roseburg Oregon

Dreaming Angel - Roseburg Oregon

This little angel is just a tiny little thing. I often see these small “lawn” size Angels proliferated across cemeteries and lawns alike across the country. She is the first one of her sort that I have seen, and may well be an original design. (So far as I have seen.)

Again a small “lawn” size ornament but so beautiful and gentle nonetheless. I feel very lucky to have stumbled across this little monument at just the right time to have caught the light like this. She’s not normally pink, but that was something I decided to add in post-processing the image.

Italian Beauty - Union Victorian Cemetery, Union Oregon

This stunning beauty has a sad and amazing story. The image you see before you is that of Katie Wright. She died at the age of 21 in 1897. Her affluent family sent her image to Italy, to have them carve her likeness from the finest marble in the Mediteranian. For over 100 years (usually) red flowers have been placed in her marble hands by unknown persons.

Legendary Blue Angel - Muscatine's Greenwood Cemetery, Iowa

Legendary Blue Angel - Muscatine's Greenwood Cemetery, Iowa

There are dozens of variations about this Blue Angel, some of which are very famous indeed. One said that before she had her hand removed she held a rose. If she dropped the rose when someone was watching, they would soon meet their end. It’s a mystery as to why the hand is removed. Some speculate that it was to prevent the dropping of the rose and to save lives. Personally, I have spotted a local trend I have not heard mentioned anywhere at all. Nearly every angel in every cemetery within a 60 mile radius is missing one or both hands! Will someone please explain that to me? Here is an article about the Blue Angel with much more information.
